Nerdy Weekly Baby Size: Week 36

This week for the Nerdy Weekly Baby series!

Congratulations! You’ve made it to 36 weeks of pregnancy, and your baby is now the size of a box of Scooby Snacks. At this stage, your baby weighs around 5.75 pounds (2.6 kg) and measures about 18.5 inches (47 cm) in length from head to heel. Your baby’s head circumference is now about the same size as their abdomen, and their fat stores continue to increase, providing energy and helping to regulate their body temperature.

How You’re Feeling at 36 Weeks Pregnant

As your baby grows and develops, you may be experiencing a range of physical and emotional changes yourself. Here’s what you can expect at 36 weeks pregnant:

  1. Braxton Hicks contractions: You may be experiencing Braxton Hicks contractions, which are mild contractions that help to prepare your body for labor. These contractions are usually irregular and don’t get stronger or more frequent over time.
  2. Difficulty sleeping: As your baby grows and takes up more space in your womb, you may find it increasingly difficult to get comfortable at night. You may also need to use the bathroom more frequently, which can further disrupt your sleep.
  3. Shortness of breath: Your growing baby may be putting pressure on your lungs and diaphragm, making it harder to take deep breaths. This is completely normal and nothing to worry about.
  4. Fatigue: Carrying around a growing baby can be exhausting, and you may be feeling more tired than usual. Be sure to get plenty of rest and take breaks throughout the day when you need them.
  5. Mood swings: Hormonal changes and the stress of impending labor and delivery can lead to mood swings, anxiety, and other emotional ups and downs. Be sure to talk to your healthcare provider if you’re struggling with your mental health during pregnancy.

In addition to these physical and emotional changes, you may also be thinking about preparing for labor and delivery. Now is a good time to finalize your birth plan, pack your hospital bag, and start thinking about what you’ll need for your baby’s arrival.

Some things to consider include:

  1. Your birth plan: Have you discussed your birth preferences with your healthcare provider? Do you know where you want to give birth, who you want in the room with you, and what pain management options you’re interested in?
  2. Your hospital bag: Have you packed a bag with all the essentials you’ll need for your hospital stay? This might include comfortable clothing, toiletries, nursing bras and pads, and items for your baby like diapers and a going-home outfit.
  3. Baby gear: Have you purchased all the items you’ll need for your baby’s arrival, such as a car seat, crib, and baby clothes? Don’t forget to install the car seat and wash any new clothes before your baby arrives.

Overall, 36 weeks of pregnancy is an exciting time as you prepare for your baby’s arrival. Be sure to take care of yourself, rest as much as you can, and don’t hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider if you have any concerns or questions about your pregnancy.
