Nerdy Weekly Baby Size: Week 19

This week for the Nerdy Weekly Baby series!

Congratulations, you’re 19 weeks pregnant! By this point in your pregnancy, your baby is starting to look more and more like a miniature human.

Gestational Size of a Baby at 19 Weeks:

They are about the size of the neurelyzer from MIB, measuring around 6 inches (15.2 cm) long and weighing around 8.5 ounces (240 grams).

Nerdy Development:

At this stage, your baby’s muscles are getting stronger, allowing them to make more purposeful movements. You might start to feel these movements, also known as quickening, which can feel like a fluttering sensation in your abdomen.

Your baby is also developing more refined senses. Their taste buds are now fully formed, and they are starting to develop their own unique fingerprints. Their skin is becoming more opaque and less translucent, and they are growing hair on their head.

How You Might be Feeling:

Meanwhile, you might be experiencing some physical changes of your own. Your uterus is continuing to expand, which might lead to some discomfort or pain in your lower abdomen. You might also be experiencing some round ligament pain, which is caused by the stretching of the ligaments that support your uterus.

At 19 weeks, you might also start to notice some changes in your skin. Hormonal changes can cause an increase in oil production, which can lead to acne or other skin issues. You might also notice some darkening of the skin around your nipples and genitals, known as the linea nigra and the darkening of areolas, respectively.

It’s important to stay on top of your prenatal care at this stage in your pregnancy. You will likely have a mid-pregnancy ultrasound around this time, which can provide more detailed information about your baby’s development. Your healthcare provider might also recommend some prenatal tests, such as an amniocentesis or a chorionic villus sampling, to check for any potential genetic abnormalities.

In addition to physical changes, you might also be experiencing some emotional changes. Pregnancy can be a rollercoaster of emotions, and it’s completely normal to feel a range of feelings, from excitement to anxiety to overwhelm. It’s important to practice self-care and to reach out for support if you need it.

19 weeks is an exciting time in your pregnancy journey. Your baby is growing and developing quickly, and you might be experiencing some physical and emotional changes of your own. By staying on top of your prenatal care and taking care of yourself, you can help ensure a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby.
