Nerdy Weekly Baby Size: Week 24

This week for the Nerdy Weekly Baby series!

Welcome to week 24 of your pregnancy! At this stage, your baby is approximately the size of the Flux Capacitor, measuring around 12.5 inches (31.75 centimeters) from crown to heel and weighing about 1.3 pounds (590 grams). This means that your little one has more than doubled in size since week 20!

Let’s take a closer look at the various developments taking place in your baby’s body at this point.

Baby’s Development

Your baby’s lungs are continuing to develop, and they are now producing surfactant, which is a substance that helps to keep the air sacs in their lungs from collapsing. This is important because it means that your baby would have a greater chance of survival if they were born prematurely.

Your baby’s skin is becoming less translucent and is starting to take on a more opaque appearance. Their body is also starting to fill out with fat, which will help to regulate their body temperature after birth.

Your baby’s digestive system is also starting to develop, and they are now swallowing amniotic fluid and producing meconium, which is the first bowel movement that your baby will pass after birth.

How You Might Be Feeling

At this point in your pregnancy, you might be experiencing a variety of symptoms, including:

  • Braxton Hicks contractions: These are irregular contractions that may feel like tightening in your belly. They are normal and usually painless, but if they become regular or painful, it’s important to contact your healthcare provider.
  • Heartburn: As your uterus grows, it can push on your stomach and cause acid to back up into your esophagus, leading to a burning sensation.
  • Backaches: As your baby grows, your center of gravity shifts, which can put extra strain on your back muscles.
  • Fatigue: You may be feeling more tired than usual as your body works hard to grow your baby.

Nerdy and Geeky Facts

  • At 24 weeks, your baby’s taste buds are starting to develop, and they can taste the flavors of the foods you eat through the amniotic fluid.
  • Your baby’s brain is developing rapidly, and they are now capable of experiencing REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, which is the stage of sleep where dreaming occurs.
  • Your baby’s eyes are fully formed, but they are still closed. They will open around week 27 or 28.

Week 24 is an exciting time in your pregnancy journey as your baby continues to grow and develop. While you may be experiencing some uncomfortable symptoms, it’s important to focus on the incredible changes happening in your body and the amazing little person that you are growing inside you. Be sure to take care of yourself and stay in close communication with your healthcare provider throughout your pregnancy.
