This week for the Nerdy Weekly Baby series!
Welcome back, nerds! Today we’ll be diving into the exciting world of fetal development at 22 weeks. At this point in the pregnancy, the baby is approximately 11 inches long and weighs around 1 pound. That is the size of Luke’s lightsaber hilt!
Fetal Development at 22 Weeks
During week 22, the baby’s sense of touch is starting to develop. The skin is becoming more sensitive and the baby is able to feel the movements of the mother more acutely. The baby’s digestive system is also starting to mature, as the intestines begin to produce meconium – the dark, sticky substance that will eventually be the baby’s first bowel movement.
In addition to these developments, the baby’s eyes are starting to move behind the eyelids, and the brain is becoming more complex. The brain is developing more folds and grooves, which will eventually allow for more advanced cognitive abilities.
The mother may also start to feel more pronounced movements from the baby at this stage. Some women describe these movements as “flutters” or “butterflies,” while others may feel more distinct kicks or jabs.
How Women Feel During Week 22
At 22 weeks pregnant, women may start to experience more discomfort as the baby grows and takes up more space in the uterus. Some common symptoms at this stage include:
- Back pain: As the uterus expands, it can put pressure on the lower back, causing discomfort or pain.
- Braxton Hicks contractions: These are “practice” contractions that the uterus may experience in preparation for labor. They are usually painless but can be uncomfortable.
- Heartburn: As the baby grows, it can put pressure on the stomach, causing acid to back up into the esophagus.
- Shortness of breath: The growing uterus can put pressure on the diaphragm, making it harder to take deep breaths.
- Swollen feet and ankles: This is a common symptom of pregnancy, as the body retains more fluids.
If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, it’s important to talk to your healthcare provider to make sure everything is on track.
Week 22 is an exciting time in fetal development. The baby is becoming more sensitive to touch and developing more advanced cognitive abilities. At the same time, you may be experiencing more discomfort as the baby grows and takes up more space in the uterus. As always, it’s important to keep in touch with your healthcare provider and listen to your body as you navigate the joys and challenges of pregnancy. Stay nerdy, folks!
