Meet Earl the Squirrel: The unofficial icon of Universal Orlando’s holidays. Explore his whimsical journey, hidden in the Christmas tree, and more.
The Legend of Earl The Squirrel
Around 2015, just before the holiday season, a quirky story became part of Universal Studios Florida’s yuletide lore. It has been told to us by Team Members, it all began when the park’s dedicated team was hard at work, assembling the centerpiece Christmas tree in the New York Area of Universal Studios. Midway through the process, a strand of blue lights unexpectedly went dark. After some head-scratching and investigation, it was revealed that a now lifeless squirrel had nibbled on the wiring, causing the outage. This mischievous critter earned the nickname “Earl the Squirrel.”
Earl’s Hidden Legacy
The amusement from Earl’s escapade led to an unofficial tribute that’s now an annual tradition.
Within the centerpiece Christmas tree each year, visitors can spot an electronic likeness of Earl. His exact location within the tree varies each year, adding an element of fun and challenge for park guests. My family and I love searching for him!
From Easter Egg to Unofficial Icon
Noticing Earl’s growing popularity, Universal Creative saw an opportunity to make him an unofficial icon. In 2020, Universal incorporated Earl into the Holiday Tribute Store with Earl’s Tree Farm, a section of the store, featured food, beverages, and merchandise inspired by this nutty legend.
Earl’s Expanding Empire: Merchandising
Earl’s appeal continued to grow, leading to his presence in the 2021 Tribute Store as “Earl the Squirrel’s Christmas Curios Museum and Emporium.” Visitors could enjoy new goodies adorned with Earl’s unique charm, including themed clothing, houseware, and decor. Fans even had the chance to purchase a plush squirrel to add a touch of whimsy to their Christmas.
Earl’s presence isn’t limited to the tree anymore; his likeness adorns an array of merchandise. From shirts, sweaters, and mugs to Christmas ornaments, gift tags, blankets, and pillows, there’s an Earl-themed souvenir for everyone.
Meet Earl the Squirrel
As Earl’s popularity soared, Universal Orlando introduced an in-person meet-and-greet character in 2021. Standing 6-feet tall and sporting a green sweater declaring his love for acorns, he became a hit among visitors.
In 2023, the Meet and Greet for Earl the Squirrel is located across from Cafe La Bamba. Check the app for times.
We have also seen some teasers that Earl may be getting a partner, Pearl the Squirrel!
The Annual Holiday Tree Hunt
Each year, Universal Orlando has a Holiday Tree Scavenger Hunt that takes places in many stores throughout the park. In 2022, the Tree Hunt was rebranded as Earl’s Holiday Tree Hunt!
