Does Universal Orlando let you wear costumes?

Yes!!! Universal Orlando does in fact let you wear costumes if you comply with their specific Costume Guidelines in place to ensure guest safety, maintain the park’s atmosphere, and comply with regulations. Learn more about the rules below:

Here are the key points regarding wearing costumes at Universal Orlando

Now that you know you can wear costume, make sure to follow these rules.

  1. Prohibited Items: Costume masks, veils, long trains, live animals, swords, and weaponry are not allowed. However, face coverings for medical or health reasons are permitted. Any homemade wands must have rounded ends and be appropriate in nature.
  2. Size Restrictions: Costumes should not exceed 28 inches in width and 80 inches in height to comply with Universal Orlando’s metal detection regulations. Additionally, costumes are subject to secondary x-ray screening, and Universal Orlando has the final say on whether an item is permissible. Inappropriate items will be confiscated but can be retrieved at the Universal CityWalk hub at the end of the day.
  3. Compliance and Impersonation: Guests wearing costumes must not give the impression that they are Universal Orlando Team Members. It is essential to respect the distinction between guests and park personnel.
  4. Safety Measures: To ensure guest safety, certain costumes may not be allowed on specific attractions. This policy aims to prevent any potential hazards or obstructions during the ride experience. Keep in mind too that certain rides have restrictions on wearing wizard robes. If you want to ride the motorbike seat on Hagrid’s, you cannot be wearing a wizard robe (or any loose clothing for that matter).

Prioritize Your Comfort and Functionality

Now that you know the rules, here is where you decide if you really want to go in costume. When planning your costume for a visit to Universal Orlando Resort, it’s important to consider comfort alongside style. Remember, by finding the right balance between comfort and cosplay, you can fully enjoy your time at Universal Orlando without sacrificing your overall experience.

Hot/Cold Weather

Opt for breathable fabrics that allow for movement and won’t leave you feeling restricted. Consider the weather conditions and choose costumes that can be layered or adapted to changing temperatures. I made a large warm heavy cape for Olivia when she went to Uncelebration as it was January and cold.

Rain or Water Rides

Remember, afternoon showers are a very common occurrence in Orlando. The weather in Florida can be unpredictable, and a sudden downpour can catch you off guard. That’s why it’s wise to plan your attire with the possibility of rain in mind. Opting for clothing that can withstand getting wet or can be easily covered or removed in case of a shower or water ride is a smart choice. By considering the weather conditions and planning accordingly, you can ensure a more comfortable and enjoyable experience at Universal Orlando.

Comfortable Footwear

Comfortable footwear is a must as you’ll be doing a lot of walking and exploring. You might be able to find something like Sketcher Sandals that blend in without taking away from the costume. Or carry a change of shoes with you.

Pockets, Pockets, Pockets

If I haven’t mentioned it before, I build pockets into every single item of clothing that I make. Pockets are super handy, especially when it comes to costumes. They help maintain the character’s authenticity without sacrificing practicality. You can stash your phone, wallet, or even keep track of your wand in those nifty pockets.

Bags and Pouches

If pockets aren’t an option, consider using a small bag or pouch that complements your costume. Look for designs that blend seamlessly with your character’s aesthetic, such as a themed satchel, belt bag, or even a custom-made accessory. These can provide convenient storage while keeping your hands free. Additionally, consider the size and weight of the items you plan to carry and store in the free lockers, opting for lightweight and compact alternatives when possible.

Skirts vs Pants

Through my personal experience, I’ve come to realize that wearing skirts or dresses to amusement parks didn’t work well for me, especially since I love going on roller coasters. I’ve found that pants, shorts, skorts, or my personal favorite, culottes (see my pattern here), are far more suitable and comfortable choices for enjoying the park to the fullest.

Wizard Robes

Wearing wizard Robes can add an extra touch of fun and immersion to your visit, especially in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. You can purchase them at the parks or prior to your arrival. I’ve made some for my daughter and she loves them. I also made them waterproof to use in the place of a poncho.

Please note that these costume guidelines are subject to change, and it’s advisable to review the official Universal Orlando Resort website or contact guest services for the most up-to-date information regarding costume policies and any exceptions that may apply.
