If you’ve been following my “not-so-normal” life for a while, you know that Universal Orlando is my home away from home. But even I have my limits. There are some days when the crowds are so thick you can’t even find a quiet corner in Knockturn Alley to sip on your Wizard’s brew.
Universal Orlando calls these “Blockout Dates.” I call them “Days to avoid the parks entirely!”
If you’re a Power Pass or Seasonal Pass holder, 2026 is going to be a big year—especially with everyone buzzing about the new magic happening across the property. Before you pack your wand and head to the Orlando, let’s make sure your pass actually works.
What Are Blackout Dates, Anyway?
Think of “Blockout Dates” as Universal’s polite way of saying, “It’s going to be a zoo today, and your pass isn’t invited.” Basically, these are specific windows—usually centered around holidays or massive events—where Seasonal and Power passes won’t get you through the turnstiles at Universal Studios Florida or Islands of Adventure. While it might feel like a bummer to be “locked out,” it’s actually a blessing in disguise. If Universal Orlando is blocking you out, it’s because the parks are currently nearly or at capacity with people who don’t mind standing shoulder-to-shoulder in the Florida heat.
Why Do Blackout Dates Exist?
Here’s the deal: Universal Orlando isn’t just being a buzzkill. They set these dates during “Peak” times—think Spring Break, the middle of July, and the week of Christmas—to manage the absolute madness of the crowds. It’s all about crowd control. Because let’s face it, nobody loves the “atmosphere” of a 90-minute wait for Fast and Furious or being unable to find a single open table at Minion Cafe. By blocking out certain passes, they try to keep the parks from becoming a total gridlock. Personally? I’m happy to let the tourists have those days while I stay home.
Quick Guide: Does Your Pass Have Blackout Dates?
- Premier Pass & Preferred: You’re the VIP. Zero blackout dates for the parks.
- Power & Seasonal Passes: This is where it gets tricky. You have specific dates where the gates are closed to you.

Remember, if you’re a Seasonal Passholder, your pass is usually blocked for all concert dates at just Universal Studios Florida. Power Passholders can usually get in, but only until 5:00 PM on concert nights. If you want to see the bands, you’ll need a Preferred or Premier pass—or a very generous friend with a guest pass.

The “Rebecca” Strategy: Why I Actually Love Blackout Dates
I know, I know—”Why would you love being told you can’t go to your favorite place?”
Because if it’s a blackout date, it means the parks are packed. And if you’ve read my posts before, you know I don’t go to Universal to wait 120 (or even 45) minutes for Hagrid’s. The “vibe” on blackout dates is mostly just people stepping on your toes.
How we decide when to go:
- Check the Express Pass Prices: If the price for an Express Pass is skyrocketing on a day that isn’t blocked out, stay home anyway. That’s Google’s way of telling you the park is full.
- Use the “Gave Back” Rule: Occasionally, Universal “gives back” dates (like they did for Thanksgiving a couple of years ago). Always check the UOAP Facebook group or the app about two weeks before a holiday.
- Resort Life: Even if you’re blocked out of the parks, you aren’t blocked out of the hotels! We love taking the water taxi to Portofino Bay or the Royal Pacific just to eat and relax. You get all the Universal atmosphere with none of the shoulder-to-shoulder crowds.
Mark Blockout Dates on your calendar
Don’t let a blackout date ruin your “particular agenda.” Mark these on your calendar now, or just check back on the App throughout the year, and plan your trips for those sweet, quiet Tuesdays in January or September instead.
