The Best Kept Secret: Why I’m Skipping the Super Bowl for Diagon Alley

If you’re checking the Universal Orlando crowd calendar for February, you might be tempted to avoid the weekends entirely. But there is one specific day that feels like a glitch in the Matrix: Super Bowl Sunday.

For anyone who doesn’t know me: While half the country is screaming at a TV and stressing over prop bets, I’d much rather be wandering through Diagon Alley with a wand in hand or checking in with my favorite bartenders at the Royal Pacific.

If you’re a Universal Orlando devotee (AP holders like me), you know that Super Bowl Sunday is the ultimate “cheat code” for the parks. Whether you’re a local looking to turn off your brain or a first-timer who wants to see the sights without being trampled, this is the day.

Forget the Game, Give Me the Vibes

Most people assume Sundays are a nightmare. Usually, they’re right. But on Super Bowl Sunday, a magical thing happens: the crowds evaporate around 3:00 PM. While the rest of the world is settling in for kick-off, the parks become a serene, ghost-town version of themselves.

I’m the first to admit I don’t go to Universal to “rope drop” or hit a 20-ride count. I go to wander. I can spend three hours in Diagon Alley just watching kids (and adults) get scared by the Dragon and doing magic with my interactive wand.

The “Do-Nothing” Guide to Super Bowl Sunday

If you have a “particular agenda” like I do—one that involves more atmosphere and fewer G-forces—here is how to play the day:

  • The Parks are Ghost Towns: By mid-afternoon, the standby lines for even the big hitters like Hagrid’s or VelociCoaster usually take a massive dip. You don’t even need Express Pass; you just need a lack of interest in football.
  • Mardi Gras Magic: In 2026, the Super Bowl falls right in the heart of Mardi Gras (which kicked off Feb 7th!). You get all the beads, the food booths, and the parade energy without the typical Saturday night crush. It’s the best of both worlds.
  • The CityWalk Exception: The only place that isn’t quiet is CityWalk. Specifically NBC Sports Grill & Brew. If you actually want to see the game, you’d better have made a reservation months ago. They usually have a “Big Game” experience with a hefty food/drink minimum (think $100+ per seat), so unless you’re dying to be in a loud room of fans, stay inside the park gates.

If You Actually Care About the Score (Or Just the Snacks)

Look, I get it. Some people actually want to watch the game. If that’s you, don’t just wing it—that’s a rookie mistake. CityWalk becomes a localized frantic mess for sports fans, so “just grabbing a table” isn’t a thing that happens on Super Bowl Sunday.

If you want to watch the game without the chaotic energy of NBC Sports Grill, do what we do: escape the “winter” (I use that term loosely, but hey, it gets breezy) and head to the resorts.

We love taking the water taxi back to the Loews Royal Pacific. It’s basically our home away from home, and the staff there are essentially family at this point. Instead of fighting for a spot at a crowded bar, we head to the Orchid Court Lounge. It’s the perfect spot to grab a drink, actually find a seat, and watch the game on the big screen in an atmosphere that feels upscale rather than frantic.

Pro Tip: Even at the resorts, if you have your heart set on a specific sit-down meal while the game is on, make a reservation. Places like Jake’s American Bar will fill up with people had the same “let’s escape the park” idea as you. Don’t let a lack of planning ruin your vibe; secure the table so you can focus on the important things—like the sushi at Orchid Court and the fact that you aren’t standing in a 90-minute line for a roller coaster.
